actually referring to the Chinese diaspora in Indonesia or Thailand, where their cultural practices and language was forcibly suppressed and eventually assimilated more or less to the national identity.

what you mentioned sounds more like appropriation though.

Hmmm..
one of the problems that might face malaysian chinese artists contemplating on doing a similar project would be that the Chinese was never really assimilated, our culture was steadfastly ours to keep, no identity to have been lost and to be reclaimed.
