The Annexe Gallery is arguably the most democratic art space in the Klang Valley. In her introductory talk to contemporary art in Malaysia last month, Beverly Yong considered The Annexe as having played a vital role in allowing the arts to reach more people. With Pang’s semua pun sapu (take it all) approach to arts programming, The Annexe has become a space where punk rockers, tango dancers, conceptual artists and portrait painters (to name a few) rub shoulders with each other and various audiences in a delicious orgy of creative diversity.

Is your life governed by a never-ending series of deadlines? Do you lose track of all the hats you wear? Is your job description so hyphen-heavy that it barely fits on your (self-designed-self-printed) business card? Then you’re probably that special species of worker known as the freelancer.
In case you missed it, here is the podcast version of the interview between Valentine Willie (Founder and Director of Valentine Willie Fine Art*) and Patrick Michael on the Money Wise segment of Business FM 89.9. I think it aired in early Feb of this year.
It’s an accessible, down-to-earth introduction on the hows and whys of investing in art in Malaysia. He makes particularly pertinent comments about the realities of our small market, compared to those of Indonesia and the Philippines. You also get the backstory on the origins of his unique name.
